Loire Valley, 4–5 days, self-drive
The Loire Valley holds over 300 châteaux within a couple hours of each other, and the trick to enjoying it is picking four or five rather than attempting a checklist. Chambord’s scale and rooftop terraces, Chenonceau’s arches spanning the river itself, and Villandry’s formal gardens cover the range from grandiose to intimate without redundancy.
Base in Amboise or Blois rather than day-tripping from Paris — both put multiple châteaux within a short drive and are pleasant towns in their own right, with Amboise holding Leonardo da Vinci’s final home, Clos Lucé, connected to the château by an underground passage he reportedly used.
Rent bikes for at least one day — the Loire à Vélo cycling route runs alongside the river and between several châteaux, a genuinely different way to experience the valley than a car window.
