Provence, 6–7 days, self-drive
Every Provence photo shows the same lavender field near Valensole in late June, and while it’s worth seeing once, the region’s real character is in its hilltop villages — Gordes and Roussillon (built from the ochre cliffs it sits on) get the crowds, while Ménerbes and Lourmarin deliver the same stone-and-shutter charm with a fraction of the tour buses.
Base in the Luberon valley for easy access to both the villages and Aix-en-Provence’s market culture, then push south to the Camargue’s wetlands and wild horses for a genuinely different landscape most itineraries skip.
Lavender blooms late June through early August only — outside that window, the fields are simply green rows, so time the trip deliberately if that’s a priority, and expect every hotel in the region to be booked and priced accordingly during peak bloom.
